Through songs and stories of the American frontier, Iowan Frank Strong, Jr. (aka “Freight Train” Frank) delights young audiences with the melodies and memories of America’s collective past. Donning a conductor’s hat and pinstriped vest, Strong, who is blind, performs on guitar and harmonica and celebrates the colorful history of building and riding the rails throughout the United States.

A Closer LookAbout the Artist
"Freight Train" Frank Strong is a guitarist, vocalist, and harmonica player who has been performing for more than 30 years.  He performs blues, folk, country, and Americana music in all kinds of venues including schools, colleges, coffeehouses, and music festivals.  "Freight Train" Frank is actively involved in VSA Iowa entertainment and educational programs and has produced two music CDs.  He and VSA Iowa storyteller Maureen Korte are regular performers at the Iowa State Fair.  Legally blind since age 18, "Freight Train" Frank calls music ‘the best aspect of my life.’


About the 2010 International VSA Festival
This performance is presented as part of the 2010 International VSA Festival.  From June 612, 2010, VSA, the international organization on arts and disability, will bring together artists, educators, researchers, and policy makers with disabilities from around the world for a multicultural celebration of the arts and education. The Festival will feature visual, performing, literary, media artists, and a guest list that includes more than 2,000 participants from all corners of the globe.
