How many cultures can we be? Why not all of them! Discovery Theater’s play explores what it means to grow up in the heart of the American melting pot. Memories of Celia Cruz in mama’s kitchen, tales from a crowded subway, and some ‘pick-one’ boxes make for lots of laughs and surprises. Written in collaboration with the Young Playwrights’ Theater, the show explores the triumphs of today’s multi-culti kids.

This show is also available to come to your school!  Please visit our TOUR PAGE for more information.

A Closer Look – About the Production
The museum theater production African Roots, Latino Soul was the result of an exciting partnership between Discovery Theater and more than 30 DC public school students under the guidance of Young Playwrights’ Theatre (YPT).  4th-7th grade students at MacFarland Middle School and 10th-12th grade students at Bell Multicultural School (many of whom come from, or have parents who come from, Africa, Central and South America, and the Caribbean) drew on their experiences and imaginations, working in small groups to compose monologues, dialogues, scenes, poems, and songs. Their writings became the basis of African Roots, Latino Soul.
