Discovery Theater, the Smithsonian Associates' live theater for children since 1979, is a unique teaching tool and resource that embodies our mission to provide a variety of educational and cultural programs that illuminate the intellectual riches of the Smithsonian Institution. Discovery Theater provides high-quality, professionally performed programming to over 50,000 of the region’s children, their parents, teachers, and schools each year. Approximately 60% of our daily audiences are from schools that serve the area’s neediest children—those at greatest risk of educational failure and economic hardship—with special emphasis on serving children from age three to fourteen. We regularly draw from over 600 public and private schools, day care centers and local camps throughout the DC/MD/VA area. To assure access to even the most disadvantaged, Discovery Theater maintains a low group ticket price.
If you appreciate Discovery Theater and would like to show your support for live performances for young audiences at the Smithsonian, we hope you’ll consider making a donation to the Smithsonian Associates. Your contribution will help ensure that we are able to continue offering the outstanding programming you’ve come to expect.
